Haydn wrote his sonatas to be played on any of harpsichord, clavichord, or hammerklavier. In his maturer period, he wrote sforzando and other dynamics onto some of his sonata, indicating that they were intended for the hammerklavier, which was an early type of pianoforte. This 1st movement of the sonata in D is marked allegro con brio. It does have some sforzando marks, so it can be played best on a piano.

The exposition starts off with theme A in D major, using a chirpy phrase of descending D octaves.This lasts 8 bars, then is followed by 8 more bars of semi quaver broken chord passages which end in a sort of 2 bar bridge into A major, ending firmly on a repeated A major chord. Theme B now continues right through to the end of the exposition in this newly-established key of A major. At first a melody in the right hand is accompanied by quaver chords in the left. Some scale-like passages come next, followed by a dramatic interlude in which Haydn writes an arpeggio in the totally foreign harmony of Bb major, then another in F# diminished. Then there is a long trill above a chord of E7th, which sound like the last bar of an orchestral concerto immediately prior to a cadenza. This leads to a sort of mini-coda ending the exposition firmly in A major.

The development starts with theme A, but in the key of A major, the dominant key of D major, and played with the left hand. Haydn then wanders from A major through various keys with semi quaver scale passages for the left hand, arriving at another dramatic section of arpeggios and a very long trill on a chord of F7th. From this very distant key, Haydn moves rapidly via a 2-bar bridge, into the recapitulation's main theme A, and back in the home key of D major.

The recapitulation is a substantial variation on the exposition, but theme A ends the same way as before. Theme B only repeats the first half of the first bar of the exposition version, then goes on to develop and extend the theme and the scale passages. The dramatic interlude this time dwells on an arpeggio of G# harmony followed by a trill above an A7th chord, the dominant seventh chord for our home key of D major. So this firmly takes us into the coda, this time in D major.
