This lively polka tune was composed by Werner Thomas, who was an accordionist at a café-restaurant in Davos, Switzerland in the 1950s. He called it a bird song or a duck song. Just listening to this tune, when played in its original polka style, conjures up images of Bavarian/Austrian/Swiss costumes, thigh-slapping, and yodelling. Obviously, many tourists and skiers who heard this tune couldn't forget it, so they took it home to the USA and many other parts of the world. It was recorded by many popular singers in many different languages. Somehow during its wanderings, its name became the chicken dance, and it was a big hit, especially with children who enjoyed making a set of moves to fit the tune.
