Canon on Ravenscroft's Psalter Tallis Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Tallis's Canon dates from the early 16th century, but is still sung in churches today .

In this Canon, the main tune is sung by two voices, one bar after the other. The tenor starts first, followed by the soprano. The bass and alto sing the harmony parts. In this arrangement, the tenor tune has been doubled one octave higher, played here by the violin. Soprano and alto are played by flutes, and tenor and bass by bassoons.

The canon was published in 1621 in Ravenscroft's Psalter, with these words:- Raise the Lord o ye gentils all, which hath brought you into his light, ..... .Thomas Ken ((1637-1711) wrote the more modern words still in use today, as follows:-
All praise to Thee, my God, this night, For all the bless-ings of the light! Keep me, O keep me, King of kings, Be-neath Thine own al-might-y wings
