Rite of Spring - Adoration of the Earth Stravinsky Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
The story behing Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring is based on his vision of a solemn pagan rite in which wise elders seated in a circle, watch a young girl dance herself to death, as a sacrifice to please the god of Spring. The unconventional ballet was considered scandalous and nearly caused a riot at its Paris premiere in 1913. There were catcalls, fist fights and screams of abuse, because the music was so barbarically dissonant, so relentlessly thumping and jolting rhythmically.

This theme comes from scene 7 in Act 1, and is subtitled The Sage (Adoration of the Earth) (Le sage)
