Till Eulenspiegels Lustige Streiche Strauss-Richard Help Opus Details

Wonderful orchestration and an amusing story-line characterize Richard Strauss's tone poem Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks. The story concerns the misadventures and pranks of the German peasant folk hero, Till Eulenspiegel. The two themes representing Till are heard on the horn and the clarinet. The horn theme is a lilting melody that reaches a peak, falls downward, and ends in three long, loud notes, each progressively lower. The notes of this tune bear an uncanny resemblance to the natural harmonics or overtones of a deep F as fundamental tone. The clarinet theme is crafty and wheedling, suggesting a trickster doing what he does best.

The work opens with a 'Once upon a time' theme on the violins setting a calm mood, but not for long!, A solo French Horn blasts out two repetitions of the first Till theme. The theme is taken by the rest of the orchestra, which plays with the triplet theme and builds it into a crescendo. Then this extract concludes with the tutti orchestra repeating two notes, along the lines of a child's "ta da!". The clarinet theme is heard next, suggesting Till's laughter as he plots his next prank.

1    Till Eulenspiegels Lustige Streiche starts with a happy, cheeky tune on the strings.

2    This is Till's leitmotif. The horn theme is a lilting melody that reaches a peak, using notes of the natural harmonics of F, then drops to the fundamental.

3    Here the clarinet theme is crafty and wheedling, so Till seems to be puting out his tongue at everyone, after his naughty prank.
