Piano Concerto No.2 in C Minor Op 18 3rd movement Rachmaninov Help Opus Details

Rachmaninov's supremely romantic and ever popular 2nd piano concerto is full of soaring melodies. But it is exceedingly difficult to play, requiring a piano virtuoso of exceptional talent.

This 3rd movement is marked allegro scherzando. It opens with the string section playing a lively tune accompanied by pizzicato basses. A crecendo culminating in a big cymbal clash leads into a bravura and virtuosic piano passage. Eventually this is followed by the first main theme, on piano. This is a very rapid spririted tune, but still using big chords. It is difficult piano playing! Quite a while later, the second theme, appears on the oboe. This is another of Rachmaninov's memorable, expansive melodies. Eventually, this tune, in a more elaborated form, is repeated on the piano.
