Rachmaninov's supremely romantic and ever popular 2nd piano concerto is full of soaring melodies. But it is exceedingly difficult to play, requiring a piano virtuoso of exceptional talent. Another score edited by Noel Woodhouse.
This second movement is marked adagio sostenuto, and after some orchestral chords and some piano arpeggios, the flute enters with a wistful melody. Only four bars later the clarinet takes over, with a new tune, which is memorable, beautiful, and amazingly constructed out of only 4 different notes.
