Flute Quartet in D K285 3rd movement - Rondeau Mozart Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Tune DescriptionThis Rondo is the 3rd movement of the Flute Quartet, which was written in 1777 whilst Mozart was in Paris with his mother, and completed in Mannheim. He had a commission of 200 florins promised from a wealthy amateur, an East Indian Dutchman named Ferdinand De Jean, who wanted four concertos and six quartets. Mozart probably only received half of this, because he did not complete all the flute works asked for. Mozart clearly did not particularly like the flute, nor did he like the Dutchman, so he wrote these works reluctantly. He wrote to his father Leopold, in Salzburg "You know that I become quite powerless whenever I am obliged to write for an instrument I cannot bear."

There is no gap between the 2nd adagio movement and this 3rd movement, which is a jolly final Rondo, marked Allegretto. This energetic movement is, like the preceding one, simple in its construction and very charming, with brief contrasting episodes, characteristic of a rondo.

Most people would be proud of such lyrical and charming works, without having felt reluctant!
