Flute Quartet in D K285 2nd movement - Adagio Mozart Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Tune DescriptionHere is the lyrical adagio movement from the Flute Quartet, written in 1777 whilst Mozart was in Paris with his mother, and completed in Mannheim. He had a commission of 200 florins promised from a wealthy amateur, an East Indian Dutchman named Ferdinand De Jean, who wanted four concertos and six quartets. Mozart probably only received half of this, because he did not complete all the flute works asked for. Mozart clearly did not particularly like the flute, nor did he like the Dutchman, so he wrote these works reluctantly. He wrote to his father Leopold, in Salzburg "You know that I become quite powerless whenever I am obliged to write for an instrument I cannot bear."

This adagio movement is beautiful and poetic, in which the flute sings long, embellished lines above the plucked accompaniment of the strings. The noted musicologist Albert Einstein has praised this movement in this quartet as one 'suffused with he sweetest melancholy', and thus he declares it is 'perhaps the most beautiful accompanied flute solo that has ever been written'.

Most people would be proud of such lyrical and charming works, without having felt reluctant!

There is no pause after the end of this movement, it must continue straight on into the 3rd movement.
