Symphony No.4 in A Op 90 - Italian - 2nd movement Mendelssohn Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Mendelssohn wrote his 4th symphony in Berlin in 1832, just after returning from a lovely holiday in Italy. It doesn't actually contain any Italian folk tunes, but its lively warm melodies capture the pleasures Mendelssohn found in Italian art, people and scenery.

The slow 2nd movement, marked andante con moto, is an impression of a religious procession the composer witnessed in Naples. A short 4-bar introduction by the first violins sets the sombre mood, then the first theme is a sombre processional tune in D minor, introduced by the violas with the oboes, against a background of cellos and double basses playing a sort of walking bass in quavers.. The second theme on first violins continues the serious mood. The 3rd theme is brighter, in A major, played by the clarinets.
