Symphony No.3 in A Minor Op 56 "Scotch" 3rd movement Mendelssohn Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Mendelssohn was quite a frequent visitor to the British Isles, in fact he went there 10 times during his lifetime. He first wrote down some sketches for this 3rd symphony whilst on holiday in Scotland, in 1829. At the time, he was brooding over the tragedy of Mary, Queen of Scots. However, he did not finish the symphony until 1841, some 12 years later! Appropriately, he accorded it the subtitle Scotch. In 1842 he returned to London, where he had his new work played to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who had become his friends.

This 3rd movement is slow and contemplative.
