Peer Gynt Op 46 No.3 - Anitra's Dance Grieg Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Grieg's 2 "Peer Gynt" suites are taken from his incidental music to a play (or rather a "dramatic poem") by Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen. This poem is fiercely romantic, typical of the 19th century literature of the time, and also strongly nationalistic, built around Norwegian folklore. Grieg wrote the music between 1874 and 1876.
The story's hero (or villain, depending on your point of view), Peer Gynt was born to a fanatic, infirm mother and a drunkard spendthrift father. He is driven out into the wide world where he leads a wayward life, drinking, deceiving and even raping his betrothed.
After seeing his mother, Ase, on her death-bed, Peer travels to exotic Arabia, where he dreams himself to be a prophet, worsipped by beautiful Arab maidens. Grieg's music "Anitra's Dance" conjures up images of the beautiful Anitra dancing just for Peer Gynt.
