Symphony No.9 in E minor - New World - 1st movement Dvořák Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Dvorak's Symphony No 9 in E minor "from the New World" has always been one of the world's top ten symphonies, because it contains a seemingly endles flow of memorable tunes, fabulous orchestration, and energetic rhythms evocative of the dynamism and energy of the United States of America.

Dvorak wrote his New World symphony in 1893, whilst he was resident in the USA as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. (1892-1893). In some catalogues it is numbered his 9th, since he did write four symphonies in his youth, but they are seldom heard. This is his last one, and it is his masterpiece. It was written to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus.

Dvorak did not quote any American music directly, all the tunes are his own, but he used characteristic rhythmic patterns and styles of tune that are clearly American in inspiration.
