Waltz No.6 in Db "Minute Waltz" Chopin Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
This Waltz in Db is probably Chopin's most famous waltz. It was inspired by a puppy dog chasing its tail. The story goes that, whilst together at her home in Paris, Chopin's lady-friend, Georges Sand, begged Chopin to write the music, after watching her own doggy's antics. So it was given the sub-title "La Valse du petit chien", although this subtitle does not seem to appear on my edition of the piano music. It has also acquired another unofficial sub-tile "The Minute Waltz", possibly because certain capable but mischeivous pianists competed against each other to play the whole waltz in one minute flat! This version takes nearly twice that time. It could sound OK played little faster, but it is an abomination to hear it at over 400 crotchets per minute.
