A pretty Welsh song from the late 18th century.The song refers to the legend of a submerged former kingdom of Cantre'e Gwaelod (Lowland Hundred) beneath Cardigan Bay. According to the legend, its bells can be heard ringing beneath the water.

Charles Dibdin 1745 -1814 wrote an opera "Liberty Hall" containing three successful songs, of which one is "The Bells of Aberdovey". The opera was produced at the Drury Lane Theatre in London on 8 February 1785.
