Australia
Return to List of Countries
Canberra is the capital of Australia, whose area is 7,686,848 square kilometres, and its population is 20,000,000 people.
Australia
Australia was populated by its own aboriginal peoples, and then predominantly by people of British origin up to the 2nd World War. During that epoch, Australian composers Percy Grainger and
Alfred Hill wrote music in a late romantic style not totally un-related to the style of the British composer Edward Elgar. but they were also influenced by the great Czech romantic composer
Dvorak. Besides its formally composed music, Australia boasts some robust folk songs recalling the pioneer era, and both Grainger and Hill collected, published, and arranged some of these songs for posterity. In the 1950s, vast numbers of immigrants arrived in Australia from other European countries, and since 1970, immigrants have come from Asia and Africa as well. This has made Australian culture more cosmopolitan, including its musical taste.
