Frederick Loewe

Friedrich (Fritz) Löwe (June 10, 1901 –
February 14, 1988), was an
Austrian-American composer. He
collaborated with lyricist Alan Jay
Lerner on a series of Broadway musicals,
including My Fair Lady and Camelot, both
of which were made into films. Loewe was
born in Berlin, Germany, to Viennese
parents. He had learnt to play the piano
by ear at age 7. He studied at a music
conservatory in Berlin, and he became a
concert pianist. In 1924 aged 23 he
emigrated to the United States with his
father and settled in New York. He
worked in various odd jobs, including
playing the piano for silent films. Then
in 1942 he met lyricist Alan Lerner, and
they collaborated on many successful
musicals including My Fair Lady, Camelot
and Brigadoon.
