Weinberger
Jaromir
Weinberger (1896-1967) was born in
Prague, Czech Republic. He studied at
Prague Conservatory at age 14, then in
Leipzig. In 1922 he went to the USA for4
years, teaching at Cornell and Ithaca.
Then he went home to Czechoslovakia, but
eventually returned to USA in 1939, to
escape the Nazis.
His opera Schwanda the Bagpiper was
extremely successful. In particular the
Polka is frequently performed as a
concert work.
