Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836) was a French army officer during the French Revolutionary wars. He is famous as the composer of the French National Anthem "La Marseillaise". He also wrote the patriotic words. He wrote the song before the revolution as a patriot. It was soon adopted as the song of the French Revolution, but de Lisle was a royalist, and far from being hailed as a hero, he was imprisoned in 1793, and he was lucky to escape the guillotine. He wrote some other songs and some poems, but no other music of his has survived into the current repertoire.
