Joseph Canteloube (1879-1957) was born in Annonay, in the Auvergne district of France, and he died in Paris. He was a composer and a collector of folk-songs. He is mainly remembered for his 'Chants d'Auvergne' or 'Songs of the Auvergne', which is a set of richly and subtly orchestrated settings of folk songs. Of these, Bailero is the most well-known.
