Tallis
Return to List of Composers
Thomas Tallis was born in England in 1505. This composer belonged to the Renaissance period, and died in 1585.
Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) wrote beautiful sacred choral music during the reigns of four distinct Kings and Queens, with widely differing views on the style sacred music should adopt. At first, under Henry VIII, he wrote highly complex polyphonic works, then under Edward VI he was forced to adopt a simpler style, with "one note per syllable".. This continued under Mary Tudor, but finally, under good Queen Bess, who was more relaxed, his music became more complex again, but with deep sensitivity to the words.
