Franz von Suppé was born in Croatia in 1819. This composer belonged to the Romantic period, and died in 1895. Suppé

Franz von Suppé (Francesco Suppé Demelli) (1819-1895) was born in Dalmatia, which is now a part of Croatia. His family origins were part Belgian and part Italian. As a teenager he studied harmony and the flute in Cremona, Italy, then law at Padua. In about 1843 he moved to Vienna, where he wrote operettas. Today the overtures from 3 of these are still often played, namely -: Poet and Peasant, Light Cavalry, and Boccaccio;  but the operettas themselves are no longer in the repertoire.
